New Voter Registration System with GIS Capabilities
In the 2022 NSGIC State Election Director Report, 89% of election directors projected that their jurisdictions would have voter registration systems capable of using geospatial data by 2027, while only 39% had systems with this capability in 2022. This represents a significant undertaking, slated to take place during 2023-2027, and one that requires GIS expertise and thoughtful execution.
Moving to a new voter registration system that is capable of using GIS data can save work effort, reduce errors, enable audits, and facilitate redistricting. It sets a state up for greater accuracy and efficiency in elections management. Conversely, purchasing a new system without that capability could lock a state into outdated list-file technology for years or decades to come.
An important starting point for investing in a suitable system is the wording of any requests-for-proposals (RFPs). Below are several sample RFPs shared by leading-edge states. These can serve as guides for other jurisdictions seeking to “future proof” their new voter management system by ensuring that it is able to work with GIS data.
